Laura Stachler's Story

Laura StachlerWe wouldn’t be much of a cookie company without an amazing cookie, now would we? If we didn’t have my mom’s outstanding gingersnap cookie recipe, we really wouldn’t have much to sell!

The kitchen is my mom’s favorite place to be. Somehow my mom always knows that no matter what, food makes us all feel better, in good times and bad! No matter what the situation, from a bad day on the playground to not making the team to not getting the job to let’s say ...being diagnosed with cancer, there really is comfort in my mom’s cooking.

My mom, Laura, grew up in the restaurant business as her parents owned a pie and burger shop in Los Angeles, California. My mom started her own company, Laura’s Divine Desserts a number of years ago building her menu based on the cakes, cheesecake, and pies that were served in her family’s shop. My mom perfected a few of her own recipes, the most special and unique being her ultimate gingersnaps!

In spring 2003 my dad went through chemo for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and one year later I began treatment for Hodgkin’s disease, the same disease that took my Aunt Sue, my mom’s sister and best friend when she was only 28. Between my dad and I, my mom sat through 28 rounds of chemotherapy. She was unwavering in her devotion and care to both of us.

It was at the treatment center that we saw so many sad faces. As my mom sat there, she realized that a lot of people just don’t know what to do or say when someone is diagnosed or going through treatment. My mom decided to create a way to bring smiles to patients’ faces, and Susansnaps were born. My mom created her gingersnaps knowing that ginger is a great stomach soother, making these a great snack for chemo patients and of course, who doesn’t like a good cookie?!!! With my mom’s amazing snaps and my logos and packaging, you get Susansnaps!

My mom named her cookies, Susansnaps because anyone can have a plain old gingersnap, but these cookies are special. My mom named them after her sister Sue and me. The cookies are a way for my mom and I to do something fun together, share our story of hope with others, put smiles on people’s faces while raising money for cancer research.

A few years ago, my mom was accompanying my dad and me (yes, at times together) to chemo sessions, and Susansnaps was just a dream. Today, we are business partners out selling thousands of cookies at trade shows, shipping cookies across the country, and even selling to Nordstrom’s espresso bars! My mom said, “I know we’re in this for a reason. There are just too many coincidences to make them coincidences. Susan’s name and designs, my cookies, and our story….I can hardly believe it myself at times!”
